| Sacramento, CA --- Sun and reasonably balmy breezes returned to California on Wednesday, January 12, and the the track at Cal-Expo was fast once again. Director of racing Fred Kuebler put together a nine-race card.
One
of the more interesting races on the program was a maiden trot, which
featured an eclectic group of horses, headed by a horse sired by
Donerail, and one sired by Yankee Glide.
However,
a homebred 4-year-old Cal-bed stud, named KD Judge, who is by Monterey
Judge and out of the Hunter’s Star mare Speedy Starlet, won the race --
and the son of Donerail finished third and the son of Yankee Glide
finished out of the money.
Homestead
Chick grabbed the lead and trotted in front for six furlongs -- and
then hit a wall. Keith Willey, a provisional driver, trained and owns
the winner, who came three-wide on the far turn and built a commanding
lead in the stretch -- before he was eased home, in 2:063.
Rick
Kuebler put One More Legend, an Iowa-bred, in the pocket at the start,
and the three-wide move by KD Judge put them in a box, until the latter
cleared Homestead Chick with 3-16 of the mile left to trot. Once clear,
he trotted well and just missed winning by a head. Ashdale, driven by
Jason Maier, finished third.
Willey owns the dam, and she has two others racing at Cal Expo, KD Justice and KD Diva.
